Since opening its doors in 1983, Kentucky Performing Arts has made a profound impact throughout our state on teaching and learning about the arts and connecting the arts across the curriculum. The KPA’s ArtsRise programs build bridges of access and understanding to the arts in school settings:

Arts Academies

Since 2000, Kentucky Performing Arts has offered Arts Academies and Arts Integration Academies to Kentucky public school teachers throughout the Commonwealth in partnership with the Kentucky Department of Education. What makes our PD’s different?

  • Active learning
  • Process-based
  • Standards-aligned in tangible ways
  • Practical – real world application
  • Stipends

The 2020 Arts Academies will be announced in the spring of 2020. For additional information, please contact Jeff Jamner at [email protected].

Gheens Great Expectations

Kentucky Performing Arts reaches beyond our stages into the community through the Gheens Great Expectations Program. Through this program nationally and internationally renowned artists and performing arts groups engage with a broader audience including schools, community centers, and health care facilities. In recent years, we have presented residency events for such artists as: Jinjoo Cho and Tessa Lark (Gold and Silver Medalists in the International Violin Competition of Indianapolis), cellist Anne Richardson, and trumpeter Nicholas Recktenwald reaching over 6,000 people in performances and workshops large and small each year.  This program is made possible with generous support from The Gheens Foundation.

On-Ramp to Deeper Learning through Arts Integration

In partnership with Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) and StageOne Family Theatre, this program provides year-round support for 18 partner schools in our district that includes professional development workshops for teachers, artist residencies in schools, school-wide professional development, and field trip opportunities.
