Vian Sora (Born 1947, Iraqi-American)

Creating dazzlingly layered abstractions that channel the turbulence of history, memory, and the natural world, Vian Sora was born in Iraq and studied original printmaking at the Istanbul Museum of Graphic Art IMOGA in Istanbul, Türkiye. She received her bachelor’s degree in Computer Science at Al Mansour University in Baghdad, Iraq and also attended Bellarmine University in Louisville, Kentucky. Sora has had many one woman shows including a 2021 exhibit at her representing gallery, Moremen Gallery, titled “Floodgates”. Notably she also had an exhibition at the Iraq Museum International Exhibition in Boston in 2006 titled “Vian Sora: A Woman in Time”. In 2020, 2019 & 2018 she received the Joan Mitchell Foundation Nominee Painter and Sculpture Award and in 2017, 2018, and 2019 she was the Great Meadows Foundation Artist traveling grant recipient.
