Malpaso master class 1

March 2019

On Friday, February 22, Havana-based contemporary dance company Malpaso (translated as “misstep”), led three masterclasses with local dance students: two classes at Western Middle School and a class at Louisville YPAS. The company started each class with a fun warm-up before moving on to repertoire based in traditional dance movement fused with Cuban technique and rhythms.

On Saturday, February 23, Malpaso executive director Fernando Sáez participated in an exhibit celebration at Iroquois Library focused on Afro-Latinx identity. The celebration featured the photographers and subjects from the exhibit, a talk by University of Louisville Afro-Latinx identity professor Dr. Thomas Edison, and an overview of Malpaso’s origin story as it relates to the culture of Cuba by Mr. Sáez. Attendees were a diverse group of community members comprised of native Cubans now living in Louisville, Spanish students from Centre College, University of Louisville, and Sacred Heart Schools, and community members who regularly participate in the library’s Saturday English as a Second Language club.
