A Star Is Born: Mccracken County, Kentucky Student Wins National Recognition In New York City

Local student makes history as the first regional winner of a Jimmy Award.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Jack Nelson, a graduating Senior at McCracken County High School in Paducah, KY, received an OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE IN AN ENSEMBLE award at the 2026 Jimmy Awards®, a national celebration of high school musical theatre talent held annually in New York City. This award is bestowed to six nominees for outstanding collaboration during the Jimmy Awards program. Jack Nelson participated in an all-expenses-paid, 10-day experience that included individual coaching, master classes, and rehearsals with Broadway professionals. His journey culminated in a showstopping performance at the live national awards ceremony on Monday, June 22, at the iconic Minskoff Theatre. Jack also received a $2,500 educational scholarship, presented by the Shubert Organization. Joining him at the Jimmy Awards was the 2026 KPA Bradley Awards Best Lead Actress Winner McKinley Harper, who will be entering her Senior Year at George Rogers Clark High School in Winchester, KY, and 114 other nominees from High School musical theater programs across the country. The 2026 Jimmy Awards ceremony was hosted by Bowen Yang.

Jack’s journey to the Jimmy Awards® began in Louisville, Kentucky, where he earned Best Actor in a Leading role at the KPA Bradley Awards held May 31, 2026 at the historic Brown Theatre —an official regional qualifier that paved the way for their selection to represent the region on the national stage. The KPA Bradley Awards is produced by Kentucky Performing Arts in partnership with Louisville Theatrical Association. The Jimmy Awards®—formally known as the National High School Musical Theatre Awards® (NHSMTA®)—shine a national spotlight on outstanding student performers from across the country.
