Acclaimed Scholar Timothy Snyder with Pulitzer Prize-winning Historian Anne Applebaum - On Freedom

Kentucky Author Forum 30th Anniversary Season

TIMOTHY SNYDER holds the Temerty Chair in Modern European History at the Munk School, University of Toronto, and is a permanent fellow at the Institute for Human Sciences in Vienna. His books, which have been published in over forty languages, include Bloodlands, Black Earth, On Tyranny, and The Road to Unfreedom. His latest, On Freedom, draws on the work of philosophers and political dissidents, conversations with contemporary thinkers, and his own experiences coming of age in a time of American exceptionalism. Snyder identifies the practices and attitudes—the habits of mind—that will allow us to design a government in which we and future generations can flourish. Timothy Snyder’s work has inspired poster campaigns and exhibitions, sculptures, a punk rock song, a rap song, a play, and an opera, and he has appeared in over fifty films and documentaries. He discussed Our Malady, and America's coronavirus response, during a Kentucky Author Forum Great Podversations podcast with Jerome Groopman.

 
ANNE APPLEBAUM is a staff writer for The Atlantic and a Pulitzer-prize winning historian. Her books include Autocracy, Inc., Twilight of Democracy, Red Famine, Iron Curtain, Between East and West, and Gulag. For seventeen years she was a columnist and editorial board member at The Washington Post. Applebaum is also a Senior Fellow at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies and the SNF Agora Institute. She is frequently a panelist on Washington Week with The Atlantic to discuss major political and international news.
