Twenty-five years after adopting the name Looking for Lilith, this Louisville theatre ensemble brings audiences the story that inspired it.
You may know Lilith as Adam’s first wife, the Queen of Demons, a feminist icon—or you may have never heard of her at all. Across centuries, her story has been told, rewritten, vilified, and reclaimed. Now, Looking for Lilith turns to its namesake to explore what happens when women insist on equality, challenge injustice, and refuse to disappear.
Created as part of the company’s 25th Anniversary Season, Finding Lilith is a newly devised theatrical work inspired by Lilith and the countless women throughout history whose stories have been ignored, rewritten, or silenced.
From her ancient origins and associations with the Garden of Eden to her transformation into a demoness and feminist symbol, Lilith has been called many things. Through it all, she remains a figure defined by independence and vilified for refusing to accept anything less than equality.
Using Looking for Lilith’s collaborative playwriting process, the devising team weaves together historical research, movement, personal narrative, music, and community storytelling, bridging ancient mythology with contemporary lived experience. The result asks audiences to consider whose stories are preserved, whose are distorted, and whose still need to be heard.
Intimate, provocative, and rooted in Looking for Lilith’s commitment to lifting women’s stories into the light, Finding Lilith invites audiences to search for Lilith—and recognize where she has been all along.
